TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - National Adoption Day was celebrated in Leon County Friday as nearly a dozen children officially joined their new families.
Back in July of 2014 Circuit Judge, Karen Gievers, in collaboration with Children's Home Society, The Department of Children and Families, and Big Bend Community Based Care, began an initiative to reduce the number of children in Leon County that were pending adoption.
At that time, there were 75 children looking for new homes. Since then, 44 of them have found their forever family, including 18 teenagers.
Even with the progress, however, there are still nearly 40 searching for their permanent homes.
Emma Phillips, Adoptions Case Manager with the Children's Home Society of Florida knows from personal experience the power adoption can have on families.
"If you are considering adoption at all, give us a call, talk to us. We'll talk about the process with you because if you have a home, if you have love to give you're probably going to be a shoo-in to adopt," says Phillips.
Friday at 1 p.m., the names of all of the children still searching for homes were read.
