Moultrie man gets 8-year sentence for firearm possession

MACON, Ga. (WTXL) - A Moultrie man who previously was a convicted felon received an eight-year federal prison sentence for possession of a firearm.

Michael Trevor Haynes, 37, received the 98-month sentence for possession of a firearm by a person previously convicted of domestic violence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Haynes, sentenced March 15, 2018, was found guilty of the charges Aug. 8, 2017, following a jury trial.

Evidence showed that on Aug. 10, 2016, two Moultrie, Ga., police offiers approached a vehicle in which Haynes was sitting. the officers began questioning Haynes as he sat in the car.

The car door was open and Haynes had his legs out the door and his feet on the ground.

Haynes provided officers with a false name and a false date of birth.

Some of Haynes' family begain walking toward the car from a nearby home.

When the officers began to ask them about Haynes' identity, Haynes charged one of theofficers and struck him in the face. The other officer grabbed Haynes to try to prevent him from fleeing.

Haynes hit an officer in the face, and eventually officerstased him twice to subdue him.

Officers removed a .38 caliber revolver from Haynes' right pocket, and at the jail officers found two small bags of marijuana on his person. They later caught Haynes trying to flush another small bag of marijuana down a toilet.
