TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - Seven businesses from across Florida were recognized Wednesday for their efforts in hiring disabled workers. The event, held in Tallahassee on the first day of Disability Employment Awareness Month, thanked large companies such as CitiGroup and SeaWorld along with small businesses like one Miami bakery that makes a point of hiring disabled workers whenever possible. The unemployment rate of disabled Floridians is well above that of the average resident. Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Jesse Panuccio says, having a job is an important step toward independence, and most disabled people are willing to work if given the chance.

Jesse Panuccio, Executive Director, Department of Economic Opportunity says, "Gainful employment for persons with disabilities allows these employees to gain new relationships and new skills, and show the world that a disability is not a bar to the life activities that everyone else enjoys."

Employers say, people with disabilities are usually among the most responsible and dedicated workers on staff.

Businesses that want to learn more about hiring workers with disabilities should contact the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation or the Agency for Persons with Disabilities to be partnered with workers who fit their hiring needs.
