TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The mother of a Tallahassee police officer killed in the line of duty is honoring her son's legacy with a simple gesture.

Betty Green has been selling homemade baked goods to remember her son, Officer Dale Green, who's birthday is on Friday.

He was killed on November 13th, 2002 while responding to a home invasion robbery.

His mother makes his favorite dessert, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, and sells them on his birthday each year.

"When my son died," said Betty Green, "he rescued two girls that had been kidnapped, and they faced death. So, they lived and he died. He did it, because that was his job."

We also talked to a sergeant who was on Officer Green's squad for a couple years. She described him as a "great spirit" who would do anything for anyone.

Sgt. Joanna Baldwin said, "He wasn't the sergeant that stayed in the office. He was the sergeant that was out in the field and worked with the officers. And as a training sergeant, he was always there to mentor the recruits as they came in and show you how it should be done -- not just tell you what he wanted done."

The proceeds from the bake sale will go to the FSU School of Criminology Law Enforcement Memorial. Betty Green said she'll keep selling cakes every year on his birthday for as long as she can.
