MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/CNN) - The star of the popular HGTV show "Rehab Addict" appears to be quite unpopular in one neighborhood.
Residents said she and her company, Detroit Renovations, have blown off a promise to restore a home, and that controversy could end up in the courtroom.
The house has been vacant for close to 10 years.
Four years ago, the city of Minneapolis sold the house to HGTV star Nicole Curtis, whose reality show features her buying and restoring homes that are dilapidated.
The house sits in City Councilman Blong Yang's Ward Five.
"1522 is a house that Nicole Curtis bought in 2013 for two dollars from the city of Minneapolis," Yang said.
Curtis failed to restore the broken-down property, forcing the city to sue her, the official said.
"The agreement says she has an allotted amount of time, six months, to get this done. She needed to put in $150,000 of construction costs and she needed to sign a quick claim deed to us that if she didn't perform, we would take the house," Yang said.
That deadline was Oct. 15, but according to Yang, it's a soft deadline.
He said according to the agreement, Curtis has a 60-day cure period so the city can't act until Dec. 15.
If Curtis continues to do nothing, Yang said he had hoped someone else can come along and make this blight right.
"We would basically market it through our vacant housing recycling program and allow for anybody to take a stab at it," Yang said.
Yang said he has not heard from Curtis or a representative from her company in quite some time.
Though she hasn't commented recently on the controversy, in a July Facebook post, Curtis said that she was waiting for the city to issue a permit for the home renovation and expressed frustration.
"The City Of Minneapolis swore under oath that the approved building plans were valid and permit issued on them and now they are saying that these plans (same ones) that we presented for a new building plans aren't valid because they can't prove that they are the same ones we had built on previously," she said. "Never mind the fact they made me pay a vacant and boarding building fee totalling over 10k even though it was never boarded by the City and we have been trying to finish it -THAT'S A WHOLE KITCHEN BUDGET GONE!"
"We had hope but we've continued to be let down," neighbor Aimee Lundberg said.
She said neighbors are furious that nothing has been done to restore the home.
"This property has continuously been a thorn. It's a danger. It's a hazard to the kids in the neighborhood, and it continues to just be an eyesore," Lundberg said.
Neighbors said they want Curtis to take responsibility for not keeping her promise.
"I just really at this point want her to be honest with the lack of her commitment to us and to community and what she says she was going to do and just has not done," Lundberg said.
