MAITLAND, Fla. (AP) — A Florida congressman says a scam in which criminals pose as IRS agents is on the rise.
U.S. Rep. John Mica said Monday he has never seen such an increase in financial scams as this one in his 20 years of public service.
Under the scam, the criminals call unsuspecting people, claiming to be IRS agents. They claim the IRS is planning serious penalties against them if they don't provide personal information.
Mica says he has turned over multiple cases to the U.S. Department of Treasury for prosecution.
