MEIGS, GA (WTXL) - The doors to the Meigs Police Department are closed tonight. Patrol cars are parked and ringing phones go unanswered after a city council voted to close the police department.

Monday night the Meigs City Council voted to close the police department, though some complain that they aren't providing much of a reason behind the decision.

Some residents said they are on edge and for some business owners like William Glass, who owns an auto dealership in Meigs, it's not the closing of the police department that upsets them, it's the mess following the decision.

His shop has been broken into before and though he sShared concern over response times, he was actually fine with the leadership overhaul because he believed it would give Meigs time to clean up its mess.

"We have a fine Sheriff on each end of us. I think you'll see that they are going to put a stop to it and take control of it. Its going to have to happen. It's obvious that the city council can't manage a small town like Meigs? It's obvious. They don't have the education? I don't know...but they can't do it and it's obvious," said Glass.

Just a few days after the city council approved the closing of the police department, a new mayor also started Wednesday morning.

While locals hold out hope that they city will clean up its act, newly sworn Mayor Cheryl Watkins said she is already ahead of the game.
