It's May the Fourth, in what has become the unofficial/official celebration of all things Star Wars! Online, WTXL ABC 27 has been taking you on a journey to a Galaxy Far, Far Away and Close, Close By.
TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) -- You've seen fans before. Die hard fans. Remember when "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" was released? Fans young and old, big and small, came dressed for success in their favorite Star Wars attire.
But you might have not realized that some of those dressed in costume might be member of worldwide organizations that are so large, they're comparable to the First Order Army.
Lance Tomkins and "Darth" Paul Cassidy are local members of one of these groups: The 501stLegion. It is a volunteer fan organization for the ultimate Star Wars fans. The 501st are all members of the Dark Side, but if you prefer to side with the Good Guys, there is the Rebel Legion.
"We [The 501st Legion] have over 6,000 members worldwide", said Tomkins, who is also the Commanding Officer for the local garrison of the Legion. "In Florida alone, we have 459 members."
All of the groups focus on screen-accurate costumes. "We do build our costumes to fine-tooth detail", added Tomkins, "We're trying to replicate every scratch, ding."
And after the legions finish their costume builds, they gather at a variety of fun events, ranging from conventions to community socials, as well as non-profit charity events.
Tomkins says that some of the causes that the legions have raised money for include foundations for leukemia, breast cancer awareness, and childhood diabetes.
"Anybody that can go, shows up," said "Darth" Paul.
Despite being on opposite sides of the force, the 501st and Rebel Legions have the same mission: To promote an interest in Star Wars and to give back to the community.
"It's just amazing to see how wide this group is and how we all, very different walks of life, but we all come together because we love the movies."
