It's May the Fourth, and in celebration of this Star Wars Holiday, all day long, WTXL ABC 27 has been taking you on a journey to a Galaxy Far, Far Away and Close, Close By...

TALLAHASSEE, Fl. (WTXL) -- When piecing together your dynamic, fashion forward costume, one aspect that may get overlooked sometimes is sewing. But, it is as important to the process as the force is to the Jedi Council.

Kris Hebert and Nancy Fisher are two local seamstresses with a love for Star Wars. Sewing is a major part of their lives. They love doing it, even though it's not an easy hobby.

"It's a big learning process", said Hebert, "But it’s  like any DIY project, you like to do it. You like the process. You like the outcome."

Making a cloak or dress for Star Wars can be challenging, depending on design.

"A basic cloak could take me about an hour and a half to two hours," said Fisher.

The art of sewing custom items such as handbags, totes, clothes, or even quilts can be a timely process. Some garments can take several days.

And the process involves threading and troubleshooting a sewing machine, laying out fabric upon fabric, using zippers, and fitting. And when it comes to Star Wars, accuracy to the movies makes the project even more time consuming.

"You have to try and make a match with accuracy and comfortability", added Fisher, "Trying to make things true to that vision, true to that world, while still using things that are commercially available."

The art of sewing may seem daunting, but in this day and age, it can be easy to pick up a bobby pin and learn the art of sewing.

"You need a basic sewing machine, search Youtube, go to local shops, get lessons," said Hebert.

And for Hebert and Fisher, all of the hard work makes the finished product that much better.
