TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)- Beginning this week, Leon and Wakulla County same sex couples can start the process of getting a marriage license.

On Friday, Leon County Clerk of Court, Bob Inzer and Wakulla County clerk, Brent Thurmond, announced that they would begin issuing licenses starting January 6th. The federal stay on licenses will be lifted Monday.

ABC 27 spoke with Leon county couple,Jim Brenner and Charles Jones, who filed a suit against the state after not being able to claim each other in their state retirement benefits program. They tell us they just want what any other married couple has.

"We're not asking for anything that doesn't come with marriage anyway. There's nothing special about it. Any married couple has the right to make a medical decision, the right to inherit property when they die, they have a right to social security and income taxes."

Judge Hinkle struck down Florida's ban on same-sex marriages following the lawsuit of Steve Shlairet and Ozzie Russ who were denied a marriage license by the Washington County clerk.
