Marijuana Could Be Spoiler In Florida Governor's Race

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The Florida ballot measure that would legalize medical marijuana could tip the tight race between Republican Gov. Rick Scott and his Democratic challenger, Charlie Crist.

Neither Scott nor Crist has made Amendment 2 a campaign centerpiece, but political experts say such measures have generally helped Democrats.

Because the amendment's main backer is Crist's boss, it has raised suspicions among some voters about its true purpose. Personal injury attorney John Morgan is chairman of the pro-Amendment 2 campaign and Crist's employer.

Crist says he supports the measure "out of compassion" for suffering people including his older sister, who was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Scott says he opposes Amendment 2 because he has had relatives who have battled substance abuse.
