LITHONIA, Ga. (AP) — Police say a SWAT team has rescued a woman from a townhome near Atlanta after they say a man armed with a knife refused to come outside, leading to a standoff with officers.
DeKalb County police Maj. Stephen Fore said in an email to The Associated Press just before noon Wednesday that the woman was rescued by SWAT team members, and the man surrendered.
Fore told reporters that police earlier Wednesday morning had blocked off street access to the neighborhood in the Lithonia area, just outside Atlanta.
Fore said Fairington Elementary School, about two miles from the scene, had been placed on lockdown Wednesday morning as a precaution.
Few other details were immediately available.
