TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Tampa man has been charged with the attempted murder of a Tallahassee victim after an argument about a bet on a video game led to a shooting.
Justin Bikal Hamilton, 24, of Tampa, was booked into the Leon County Detention Facility on Monday.
Hamilton shot a victim on April 30, 2017, after the two argued about a monetary bet on who would win a video game they were playing, a witness told a Tallahassee Police Department investigator.
The victim, who did not know Hamilton's full name, met Hamilton at a club on the day of the shooting. The two of them had returned to the victim's apartment after the club and started playing video games, leading to an argument over a bet.
The victim then asked Hamilton to leave his apartment but Hamilton refused. Eventually Hamilton pulled out a gun and began pointing it at the victim.
While they were arguing, a friend of the victim's walked in the apartment. The victim's friend told police that Hamilton first tried to hit the victim with his fists, but missed.
Police write the victim admitted that he got a knife from the kitchen during their argument but he did not know Hamilton had a gun until Hamilton pointed it at him. The victim's friend said the victim did not use the knife in a threatening or aggressive manner and continued to tell Hamilton to leave.
Eventually, documents say Hamilton finally turned to leave, but before he did, he shot the victim once. After that, he ran away.
Investigators were later able to identify Hamilton and connect him to the Tallahassee shooting.
On Friday, Hamilton was transported by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office from Tampa to the Leon County Jail.
The victim, who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen has since been released from the hospital and is recovering from his wound, according to a probable cause affidavit.
