LOWNDES COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A man convicted of ambushing a Valdosta Police officer has been sentenced to 10 years for attempted murder.

WALB reports that Stephen Beck was sentenced on Monday morning for ambushing Officer Randall Hancock back in 2016. Beck also received a five year sentence, to be served consecutively, for the possession of a gun during a felony.

Back in 2016, Officer Hancock was responding to a car break-in at Three Oaks apartments. WALB reports that when he arrived, Beck shot him and he fired back.

At the time, Beck told GBI agents he was depressed and wanted to die.

WALB reports that Beck was charged with three counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, attempted murder of a peace officer, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

He was denied bond.
