MARION COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A man arrested after trying to rob a convenience store said he was trying to prove to his mother he was "independent" and could take care of himself.

Hasan Alexander Campbell, 23, of Davie also told the detective that he was just trying to figure himself out.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detective John Lightle arrested Campbell after he attempted to rob a convenience store and was apprehended after a chase that extended into Sumter County, according to a Facebook post.

The clerk refused to give Campbell money, and a customer in the store confronted him. They fought briefly and Campbell fled from the scene.

During a post-Miranda interview with a detective Friday, Campbell asked for an attorney and then began talking.

Campbell is being charged with attempted robbery, battery and fleeing and eluding and is being held in the Sumter County Jail on $23,000 bond.
