OCALA, Fla. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies say a man told a convenience store clerk he was robbing her so carjackers wouldn't kill him.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports the man told the clerk on Monday that he'd just been carjacked.

She told deputies she gave him about $55 in cash. The man left the Kangaroo store and got into a white Chrysler sedan and drove away. She told authorities she didn't see anyone in the front seat and couldn't tell if anyone was in the back because of tinted windows.

The sheriff's office is investigating.
