Man sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2017 fatal shooting

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A man accused of killing a woman after a drug deal went wrong has been sentenced.

Rickey Stevens was found guilty of manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was sentenced to 40 years in the Florida Department of Corrections and labeled a prison release re-offender.  

He was also sentenced to 12 additional years in the Florida Department of Corrections for a violation of probation on a prior charges related to burglary and grand theft.  

Stevens shot Mary Gray back in January 2017 after witnesses said that a drug deal between Gray and Stevens went awry. 

Gray was found suffering from gunshot wounds in her car after getting into a car accident. She later died from her injuries. 


TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A man has been arrested in connection to the death of a woman found in an car with gunshot wounds.

The Tallahassee Police Department said that Rickey Stevens has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

The 25-year-old is accused of shooting Mary Gray on Sunday after witnesses said that a drug deal between Gray and Stevens went bad.

According to a witness listed in a probable cause document, Stevens was known to sell drugs. Gray's husband also had told police that she suffered from a crack addiction.

The witness said that they were with Gray when she went to purchase the drugs from another drug dealer on Jan. 8, but because that dealer was out of town, he put them in contact with Stevens. 

They two went immediately to meet with Stevens at Leon Arms Apartments on Holton Street.

According to the document, they waited for a while and were about to leave when Steven shouted at the car and approached the passenger side window to make the sale.

For reasons unknown to the witness, Stevens backed away from the window and the car began to travel forward. He held on to the car as it went, but eventually let go.

As the car traveled toward the apartments' exit, Stevens yelled out and fired several shots, some of which hit the car.

Police later found Gray inside the car suffering from a gunshot wound. She later died. 

Stevens was arrested Wednesday for second degree murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
