PORT ST. JOE, Fla. (AP) - A Florida Panhandle man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing his mother.
The Panama City News Herald reports that Jarrod Powell Slick was sentenced after pleading guilty Tuesday.
Authorities say Slick beat his mother, 58-year-old Renee Coffey, and cut her throat with a corkscrew at their Cape San Blas home in May 2014. Officials say Slick, who was 23 at the time of the killing, had a history of mental problems. He had been accused of setting two fires at a Masonic Lodge in Port St. Joe the previous year.
Slick had been set to go to trial next month.
