MIAMI, FL. (AP) - A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing his girlfriend.
A Miami-Dade County judge sentenced Silvio Rojas on Monday. He was previously convicted of second-degree murder.
Authorities say Rojas became angry one night in June 2012 when he returned to the Miami Beach apartment he shared with Mariana Miguens and didn't find her there. When she got home, the couple fought, and Rojas stabbed Miguens six times in the stomach and neck with a butcher knife. Miguens staggered out of the apartment and told a neighbor to call 911.
The Miami Herald reports that Miguens, an Argentina native, had applied to become a U.S. citizen, and her approval papers arrived in the mail the day she was murdered.
