MELBOURNE, FL. (AP) - Melbourne police officers fatally shot a person of interest in a recent string of robberies after they say he pulled a handgun on them.

The incident happened late Sunday night in a Burger King parking lot. The officers weren't injured.

Florida Today reports police had 36-year-old Matthew Wayne McDaniel under surveillance for several hours on Sunday afternoon following an armed robbery at a gas station. When he drove into the parking lot around 11:35 p.m. Sunday, officer approached him.

Commander Dan Lynch says McDaniel pulled a gun and officers responded with deadly force. McDaniel was still in the car and it wasn't immediately known whether he fired shots.
