MELBOURNE, FL. (AP) - Melbourne police officers fatally shot a person of interest in a recent string of robberies after they say he pulled a handgun on them.
The incident happened late Sunday night in a Burger King parking lot. The officers weren't injured.
Florida Today reports police had 36-year-old Matthew Wayne McDaniel under surveillance for several hours on Sunday afternoon following an armed robbery at a gas station. When he drove into the parking lot around 11:35 p.m. Sunday, officer approached him.
Commander Dan Lynch says McDaniel pulled a gun and officers responded with deadly force. McDaniel was still in the car and it wasn't immediately known whether he fired shots.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. The six officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave.
