TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A man faces two charges of attempted first-degree murder of law enforcement officers following a shooting near Tampa, Florida.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's spokeswoman said in a news release that 21-year-old Angel Jordanny Rodriguez Aviles fired a shot into the ground Thursday when a witness tried to intervene in his argument with his girlfriend.

Deputies arrived as Aviles and his girlfriend fell to the ground fighting. Corporal Brian LaVigne saw Aviles had a gun and ordered him to drop the weapon. Aviles raised the Glock 23 .40-caliber and fired at LaVigne. Deputy Michael Diaz and LaVigne both fired back, striking him in the leg. The officers weren't injured.

Records don't say whether Aviles has a lawyer.

Aviles is Hispanic. The race of the deputies wasn't immediately available.
