Man drags police officer during traffic stop in Marianna

MARIANNA, Fla. (WTXL) - A man is facing multiple charges after dragging a police officer with his car during a traffic stop. 

Shaquille Griffin was taken into custody by the Marianna Police Department. 

On Thursday, at about 9:56 a.m. officers saw Griffin driving on Penn Avenue exceeding the posted speed limit. 

While officers were conducting a traffic stop, they smelled marijuana coming from the car. As one officer requested Griffin to get out of the car, he became agitated and refused several instructions. 

As officers tried to remove Griffin from the vehicle, he accelerated from the scene, which caused an officer’s arm to become pinned in the vehicle. 

The officer was drug a short distance before being thrown to the ground.  

Officers immediately pursued Griffin and when he was found, he again refused to comply with officers. 

After a short time, Griffin was taken into custody. During an inventory of Griffin’s vehicle, 7 grams of marijuana was found. 

Griffin was taken to the Jackson County Correctional Facility.  

He is being charged with aggravated battery on law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing/eluding law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, and resisting law enforcement officer without violence.  

The officer involved in the traffic stop sustained minor injuries and was treated at Jackson Hospital before returning to duty.
