Man doing good deed wrongly accused of being fake cop

TATE COUNTY, MS (WMC) - A Facebook post showing a white SUV pulling over a car in Tate County has many people alarmed for no reason.

The post suggests the man pulling over cars is posing as a law enforcement officer, but that is not true.

Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance said there is no cause for alarm.

Lance said the owner of the small car in the photo came forward to say that the white SUV did not pull the car over or impersonate an officer. Instead, the driver of the white SUV was doing a good deed.

The car's driver ran out of gas, and the driver of the white SUV pulled over and turned on his lights to help.

"He had seen the car on the side of the road and thought the person needed some assistance. [He] stayed on scene until the father got there with the gas," Lance said. "[He] then remained with his lights flashing to help them merge back onto I-55."

The white SUV's driver is a security guard, which explains why he wore a uniform.

Lance said the SUV's driver is an upstanding citizen who has never been in trouble with the law. Lance said if you know someone who does claim to have been actually pulled over by this guy to give his department a call, but in the future if you think you see something suspicious, call law enforcement first, don't post on Facebook.
