LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - A Valdosta man died when the car in which he was a passenger left a roadway Thursday, ran into a ditch, overturned numerous times and ejected him.
Jason Dwayne Shelton, 49, originally from Warren, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene by a coroner after witnesses attempted CPR, the Georgia State Patrol said in a news release. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
The accident happened about 5:41 p.m. Thursday on Clyattville Nankin Road at Sand Oak Drive.
The driver, Jennifer Marie Penney, 33, of Valdosta, originally from Irvington, Alabama, was traveling west on Clyattville Nankin Road and attempting to negotiate a curve.
Penney, who had been wearing her seatbelt, was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for treatment of head injuries.
Troopers said they suspect speed and alcohol will be contributing factors in the collision.
