VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - A man was arrested on Sunday after police say he punched and choked a victim before holding a knife to her throat.

The Valdosta Police Department said that 31-year-old Jose Serrano has been arrested for aggravated assault.

Police said that on Sunday around 4 a.m., an officer was flagged down near the intersection of West Mary Street and North Toombs Street by a woman who seemed to be in distress.

The officer immediately saw that the woman had been assaulted and had multiple visible injuries.

VPD said that the woman told the officer that she and a male acquaintance had gotten into an argument. Eventually the argument made a violent turn, as Serrano reportedly punched and choked the woman before holding a knife to her throat.

At that point, multiple police began searching for Serrano and within minutes they found him near the intersection of Baytree Road and Melody Drive.

He was taken into custody and transported to Lowndes County Jail.
