TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A man was arrested on false imprisonment charges after he entered an ex-girlfriend's room at a living facility for women and children seeking permanent housing and held her there against her will.

Daniel Rivera, 33, was booked into the Leon County Detention Center on Thursday and remained there Friday on $9,000 bond.

Charges against him include false imprisonment of an adult, burglary with assault or battery, and obstructing justice by intimidating or threatening a witness, victim or informant.

Rivera, who "was trespassed from the Hope Community property on July 6, 2016," according to a probable cause affidavit, went to the room of his ex-girlfriend on Nov. 20, 2017.

He refused to leave despite that the woman asked him to leave numerous times and told him their relationship had ended.

While in the room, Rivera became upset and threatened to harm her along with himself and tried to strangle himself with a belt.

Rivera repeatedly pushed her away from the door as she attempted to leave the room or he acted as if he would hit her, causing her to fear he would harm her if she continued trying to leave the room, the document said.

During the incident, Rivera grabbed her phone as she attempted to use it and prevented her from calling 911.

Next, the document said, he "started to destroy the room," action that so frightened the woman "that she yelled for a fellow resident to call 911" and resulted in Rivera striking her in her face.

Rivera took her bus pass and work keys and fled the scene before Tallahassee Police Department officers arrived.

The ex-girlfriend first declined to file charges against him on Nov. 22 but later changed her mind, saying she desired to get him mental health services.

Rivera was ordered to make no contact with his ex-girlfriend after his November 20 arrest.

But the TPD investigator noted in the affidavit that Rivera placed two phone calls to his ex-girlfriend within five minutes of being assigned a PIN number to the jail's phone system. The investigator expressed belief that if released Rivera will attempt to contact the ex-girlfriend in person.

He filed paperwork requesting a public defender.
