NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a mentally ill Tampa Bay area man killed his mother and seriously injured two nieces at their New Port Richey home.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office reports that a SWAT team took 23-year-old Jason Rios into custody Thursday after a three-hour standoff at an unoccupied neighboring house.

Rios' father, Ernesto Rios, told deputies that his son was pacing around their house when he woke up Thursday morning. As Ernesto Rios was getting his four grandchildren ready for school, he says his son attacked the two girls. A struggle between the men spilled outside, and a neighbor called 911. When confronted by deputies, Jason Rios ran to the other house.

Emergency workers found 55-year-old Angela Rios dead in the family's home. The girls were taken to a nearby hospital. Two boys who lived at the home weren't injured.
