MADISON COUNTY, FL (WTXL) - Madison deputies have warned citizens of a spam email threatening to kill them unless they pay $5000 to save their lives.

Madison County Sheriff's Office said that people who have received the email said that the sender identifies themselves as "Death". They said the body of the email stated: “Someone paid me to kill you…get spared, 48hrs to pay $5000”. The email also told recipients that they would be killed if they contacted anyone else.

Deputies are telling people who receive the email to block the send and delete it immediately. They said to not respond because these emails often have hidden viruses that are designed to corrupt the receiving account.

They said that emails like these are usual made by individuals who try to hack into random victim's accounts to steal personal information. The Sheriff's Office said that investigators are attempting to find the source of the morbid messages.

Sheriff Stewart encouraged everyone to make sure their anti-virus software is up to date and to routinely scan their electronic devices to detect possible hackers.
