MADISON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Madison County School Board held a meeting Tuesday night to decide the fate of Greenville Elementary School.
The school board decided to keep the elementary school open.
A recent report on the school district's finances recommended closing the school.
The school is the smallest in the district in terms of enrollment with only 124 students enrolled in 2019.
It was decided not to close the school with no member of the board voting to close it.
Cynthia James said that "Without a heart, the body dies and if Greenville is the heart of our town, if you take our school, our community dies."
Dr. Karen Pickles said "I have to think about all the kids in this district, not just 124 kids."
The board meets January 24 to discuss ways to save money now that they are not closing the school.
Some proposed ideas were to eliminate staffing as they are over-staffed in certain areas.
Madison County School District to discuss potential Greenville Elementary closure
MADISON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A Madison County school could be closing as the district tries to cut costs and address years of fiscal challenges.
A recent report on the school district's finances recommends closing Greenville Elementary School.
The school is the smallest in the district in terms of enrollment. The recommendation is to transfer students to other district schools.
The school used to be known as "Greenville Training School." A graduate says the school plays an important role in the town.
"It's the hub of the community, and if you've even been around Greenville, you can see that it's a very impoverished community, low-income, and our people are just so needy, and we need our school in Greenville," said Cheryl Clemons, a Greenville native. "The support of this community is unanimous around here."
The school board is meeting Tuesday night at the Madison County High School cafeteria.
