LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - With a heavy amount of rain expected to sweep the area this weekend, Lowndes County hopes to better prepare you for flooding with a new flood mapping resource.
The City of Valdosta and Lowndes County partnered with the U.S. Geological Survey to create a Flood Map of the Withlacoochee River.
The river affects a substantial amount of commercial and residential areas.
This new map will allow the community to see approximately what areas could be overwhelmed by a flood event and what roads will be over-topped with water in real-time.
"Residents in the city and county can see approximately what areas will be inundated by this, including what roads will be over-topped," said Johnathan Musser, NSGA Hydrologist.
The project has been in the works since the end of 2016 and costs around $135,000.
