LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. -- A Lowndes County officer started back to work today after being attacked by an inmate on Valentine's Day. Officer Pam NeSmith experienced a brutal beating from Roy Smith while she was delivering mail to inmates. Nesmith says that the inmate snapped and attacked her, punching her in the face and beating her head with a phone.
A couple of the inmates she was delivering the mail to, stepped in to try and stop the attack. Nesmith said, "if they hadn't I would probably be dead or I'd be hurt a lot worse than I am."
The officer who was supposed to be monitoring the cells in the control room was talking on the phone with the officer who was supposed to be monitoring the floor. Marius Floyd and Titania Proctor have since been fired.
Roy Smith is now in isolation at the Lowndes County Jail and is charged with aggravated battery on a correctional officer.
