LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WTXL) - Deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office will now be equipped with body cameras.
The Sheriff's Office unveiled their 90 new body cameras Wednesday, enough for every deputy to wear one, Criminal Investigation Division Captain Stryde Jones said.
The cameras are currently being programmed and should be in use by Thursday, Jones said.
The Sheriff's Office said it is working on fine-tuning their policy to ensure privacy in sensitive situations, but the benefits outweigh the risks.
"It provides some accountability for us, but it's just also another tool that our deputies can use when they're out on patrol," Jones said. "Being able to look at that video and determine a sequence of events is just a fantastic thing."
In addition to the cameras, the sheriff's office also received 140 new tasers. These will replace their current ones which are ten years old and no longer serviceable, Jones said.
Both the body cameras and the tasers were purchased with money seized during drug arrests, costing nothing to taxpayers officials said.
