LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - Law enforcement in Georgia are investigating two fatal crashes over the weekend in Lowndes County.
The first happened around 10 p.m. Saturday on I-75 northbound near mile marker 14.
Troopers say Ernst Richard, 41, lost control due to bad weather, causing a chain reaction crash with a semi and another vehicle.
Barbara Richard, 33, and three children were hospitalized. one of the children, a 13-year-old, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The youngest of the three was flown by helicopter to Gainesville. Their condition is unknown.
Troopers say all three children were not wearing seatbelts.
That deadly crash caused a second fatal collision only a few miles away on I-75 northbound at mile marker 13.
Troopers say a semi-truck stopped on the highway because of backed-up traffic.
A truck driven by a man from Minnesota hit the back of the semi. The driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and died from his injuries.
The semi-driver and the passenger were not hurt.
