LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - Some kids caught a break from school today to celebrate the eclipse with their families.
Lowndes County wanted to ensure the safety of its kids during the eclipse and realized the event aligned with their regular early release schedule.
They also wanted to used the solar eclipse as a teaching moment, allowing students to learn about astronomy and how rare eclipses are.
School officials says releasing the children early from school allows families the opportunity to bond over the moment.
The Valdosta City School District got the entire day off, as the county only granted a half day.
