TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tallahassee police honor school crossing guards during a ceremony this morning. All of the city's crossing guards were invited to today's event held in the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) headquarters. They were given a certificate. It's in response to Governor Rick Scott's proclamation, declaring today as Florida School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

TPD says the role these people play is a crucial one to the community, because they safeguard and protect the children who live here.

Robert Austin Junior, most commonly known as "Mr. Bob", has been working as a crossing guard since 1995, currently at Kate Sullivan Elementary School. He says the appreciation means a lot to him.

"It makes me feel real good, you know, because we're out there rain or shine, cold or hot," said Austin. "It's just that you get attached to the children, so you don't mind getting up and going out there. It's fun for me."

One crossing guard honored today has worked in the community since 1988.
