TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Millions of people around the world are celebrating the second night of the eight-day festival of lights, Hanukkah and right here in the Capital City, locals gathered to honor the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem for the Jewish holiday.
A Jewish outreach group, Chabad Lubavitch of Tallahassee, held their 17th annual community Hanukkah celebration at Lake Ella.
At 5 o'clock on Sunday, they lit a 6 foot tall bubblegum menorah to commemorate the ancient holiday, in which one day's supply of oil lasted for eight days.
Hanukkah is a holiday ripe with tradition, and some of the participants at the day's celebration took a minute to tell us what tonight's community celebration meant to them.
"The children see it's fun to celebrate Hanukkah. The people get the message to be to practice your religion is something which is fun and you should do it and that's the message of Hanukkah freedom of religion," said Rabbi Schneuroirechman.
Commissioner John Dailey was present at the event as well and helped light the menorah.
The commissioner says he has been attending this event for the past decade.
The Chabad Lubavitch of Tallahassee also served food and offered many fun activities at the event.
