VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) -- An arrest has been made in the murder of a Valdosta State University student.
The body of Jasmine Benjamin, 17, was found November 17 on a couch on the fifth floor of Georgia Hall on campus. Investigators say she died from asphyxiation.
Special Agent Steve Turner with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirms the arrest of Darien Joseph Meheux, 18 of Lawrenceville.
Turner says officers with the GBI, Valdosta State University Police Department, Valdosta Police Department and Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office conducted a search for Meheux in Gwinnett County, but then Meheux surfaced in Ellaville.
Turner says Meheux turned himself into the Schley County Sheriff's Office after learning an arrest warrant had been issued.
Meheux is charged with murder in the death of Benjamin.
Investigators have not elaborated on the relationship between Benjamin and Meheux.
