MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Mid-autumn severe-weather bouts are not rare, and chances are increasing that some parts of the region may experience rough weather late Wednesday.

A vigorous low-pressure system, which has already caused instances of severe-level winds and tornadoes in the southern Plains early this week, will move toward the Ohio Valley Wednesday, while a trailing cold front will sweep through the north Florida / south Georgia counties late Wednesday afternoon through the late-night hours.

Storms ahead of the front will be capable of producing periods of heavy rain and general wind gusts.  A strong southwest flow ahead of the storm line may kick up the strength of some of the storms, possibly causing enough air movement to support damaging straight-line wind gusts and brief tornadoes.

The strongest storms are forecast to impact the Florida Panhandle and south Alabama late in the afternoon Wednesday.  Only slight weakening of the line is expected as it moves east through the Big Bend and the state line south Georgia counties in the early evening.

Most of the region is outlined in a "marginal" severe weather risk category by the Storm Prediction Center.  Areas west of the Apalachicola River have a "slight" risk potential.
