TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Students' interest in atmospheric science was lifted to new heights Tuesday.

Killearn Lakes Elementary conducted its annual weather balloon launch Tuesday morning.  Hundreds of kids, teachers, and staff gathered on the school's basketball court to view the blast-off of the balloon, carrying tracking equipment and a camera.

The effort was supported by local businesses, including a grant from Walmart.  Our First Alert Chief Meteorologist Casanova Nurse led the countdown to liftoff under a clear blue sky.   He also gave a presentation in the cafeteria covering the purposes of weather balloons and their application in everyday forecasting.

By 10:00 a.m., the balloon was moving at over 160 miles per hour, at an elevation of over 41,000 feet near Lake Park, Georgia.
