TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- A man is dead after an officer fired his gun, Tallahassee Police say, in self defense.

Tallahassee Police say they got a call just before 7:00 p.m. about a man sitting on a park bench at Lake Ella with a handgun. When officers got there, they say man was walking in the road.

According to TPD, the officers tried talking to him but something happened, causing one of the officers to pull out his weapon and fire at the man.

Lauren Hintman, who had just arrived at Lake Ella with her friends when the scene unfolded, explained what happened next.

"Immediately after the gunshots we heard sirens and cops got here fast, and then we ran over, there was a guy laying on the ground," recalls Hintman. "The cop shot him three times, no one really knows why, but people are saying he had a gun and was waving it around."

TPD has not released the name of the man or the officer involved in the shooting.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, per normal procedures, while the investigation continues.
