LOWNDES CO., Ga. -- A fire that blazed through and damaged a Lowndes County church on Christmas Day is being investigated, according to Sheriff Chris Prine.
The fire happened on Ousley Road at the Ousley Road Church of God and Christ. A resident saw smoke coming from the church at around 1 a.m. The witness called 911 and authorities from Lowndes County Fire and Rescue and the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office responded.
Firefighters were able to put the fire out, but Sheriff Prine says the church was heavily damaged.
Detectives with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire and are being assisted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Georgia State Fire Marshall’s Office and Lowndes County Fire and Rescue.
