Georgia Pacific buys Perry's paper mill

PERRY, Fla. (WTXL) -- One of Taylor County's largest employers officially has a new owner.

Atlanta-based Georgia Pacific company announced August 23 that they had closed on a deal to purchase Tennessee-based Buckeye Technologies, which manufactures specialty fibers and non-woven materials.

The $1.5 billion deal was first announced in April 2013.

Georgia Pacific acquired Buckeye Technology's specialty pulp mill in Perry, Florida as well as four other manufacturing facilities, global sales offices and Buckeye Technology's Tennessee headquarters.

According to their website, the Perry paper mill employs 700 people and creates an addition 1,000 jobs for loggers, suppliers and other services.

Karen Cole, a spokeswoman with Georgia-Pacific, told WTXL in April that they do not expect to any changes in the operations or staffing.
