MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Clear and calm conditions early Thursday morning will likely lead to the latest frost and freeze event for the region.

The Jacksonville office of the National Weather Service is placing a freeze warning in effect for Suwannee, Hamilton, and Columbia counties from 3:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. Thursday.  Temperatures will level off in the lower 30s, with a couple of hours around or slightly below freezing.

Since temperatures will stay out of the middle 20s, hard freeze conditions are not expected.

Frost is also likely to form in a widespread swath of the area, especially in open fields and rooftops not covered by tree branches or other obstructions.

The chance of freezing temperatures is not confined to the freeze warning counties.  Most of the WTXL viewing area is under the watch of the Tallahassee National Weather Service office, which discontinued issuing general freeze warnings earlier in December after a widespread light freeze occurred.  Hard freeze watches and warnings will still be issued when those conditions are forecast.
