Local veterans helping Harvey victims

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Although Hurricane Harvey is officially over, the cleanup and disaster continues in Texas. That's why folks in our area are doing their part to help.

You can donate to the victims through the local Vietnam Veterans of America chapter. From Tuesday, September 5th through Monday, September 11th, they'll accepting donations from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the VVA96 building at 241 Lake Ella Drive.

However, the donation drive organizers say they do not need clothing items at this time. Some things they do need:

  • Canned fruits or meats that are self opening and do not require refrigeration or cooking
  • snacks like individual packaged crackers, nuts, gum, etc.
  • Paper goods like paper plates, plastic flatware, paper towels, toilet paper, disposable cleaning wipes, disposable diapers, etc.
  • Cleaning supplies like bleach, household cleaners (409, Fabuloso, Comet), scrubbers, mops, pails, brooms, trash bags, etc.
  • Personal hygiene items like tooth paste, tooth brushes, soap, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products
  • School supplies
