Local Vet Reminds Animal Owners About Holiday Pet Safety

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A local veterinarian says the two things to pay attention to regarding pet safety during the holidays, are the type of plants you use when decorating and food that gets left out.

Poinsettias and lilies are very common plants when decorating the house for Christmas, but if you have cats, these plants are toxic to them and could cause kidney failure.

Also, be careful about the foods you leave out, dogs may try to get into any sweets or alcoholic drinks, which can be life threatening.

Local veterinarian Lauren Combs said that around Thanksgiving and Christmas time, more pets are brought in to the animal hospital due to an upset stomach and vomiting because of food that was left out.

"Make sure your trash can is very, safely shut and secured. And I want them to have a good holiday as well so they can definitely have treats and fun toys," said Combs. "Just make sure they're safe and being observed when they eat them and have fun with them."

Combs added that you should try to not feed your pets food from the table to keep them healthy this holiday season.
