TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - This weekend, a Tallahassee group is celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a special event in the city's south side.
The Rotary Club of Tallahassee Southside is doing something new this year on the weekend before this national holiday.
This will be the first ever Southside Dream Run.
On Saturday morning, runners and walkers will meet up at Anita Favors Thompson Plaza under the overpass.
The race is actually certified with USA Track & Field and the route takes runners up and down FAMU Way, which offers a look into the Bond community.
Race Coordinator Christic Henry said there's a reason her Rotary club centered their event around this holiday.
"We are in a situation, nationally and locally, where people are beginning to dream. They're beginning to say, 'What does equality look like in terms of resource? What does equality look like in terms of built environment?' And we want to talk about how that relates to Southside," said Henry. "We want to talk about the dream and how that translates into what our role and our responsibility is in fueling the dreams of our neighbors."
Henry said Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil will play a role in the event, and vendors will be staged at the plaza in addition to the 5K and one-mile fun run.
Henry said they're still accepting participants. This event helps raise money for the Rotary Club of Tallahassee Southside.
