TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - You've likely noticed by now that plastic straws are slowly disappearing.

Businesses like Starbucks and American Airlines announced they're stepping away from handing them out.

WTXL ABC's Jada Williams joined us live Monday morning with some of the local restaurants following suit.

Different restaurants are taking varying measures. Some aren't offering straws at all while others are handing out paper straws.

Restaurants like Township, Madison Social and Black Dog Cafe in Tallahassee don't hand over a straw when you order a drink.

This trend is all to keep straws out of landfills and floating in our oceans, serving as a potential threat to animals.

But disability advocates are asking businesses to meet them halfway, as straws help many who are physically disabled.

The owner of Black Dog Cafe says that she wants to make sure that everyone has the chance to enjoy their drinks.

However, many in the disabled community say that there are flaws with the alternatives, including the fact that steel straws aren't flexible and biodegradable straws wither easily.

The Black Dog Cafe owner says she's continuing to search for alternatives to serve every customer's needs.

Not only have businesses taken a stand, but some cities like Santa Barbara, Seattle and San Francisco have enacted legislation to ditch straw usage.
