TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — On Monday we told the story of Lyric Oaks' senior pictures done in cap and gown while wake surfing. Those photos have now gone viral, and for everyone involved it's been a whirlwind of a week.

"That was mind blowing," said Elizabeth Birdwell, the photographer. "That was a moment."

The last few days have been astonishing for Birdwell.

"I got messages from Houston, I got messages from three Tampa stations, Jacksonville," Birdwell said. "I know it's been in Atlanta."

Viral photos of the Wakulla senior football player wake surfing are appearing on televisions and timelines across the country.

"It was definitely unexpected, but it was a good turnout," said Oaks.

Oaks says he's still taking it all in.

"We're from a little town, Sopchoppy," Oaks said "We kind of put it on the map!"

"To see his idea come to life," said Birdwell. "He had a brilliant idea and he followed through with great pictures. I'm having fun riding his coattails."

Riding the coattails on a wave that no one could have imagined.

"Who would have thought? I'm just a normal photographer in Tallahassee, Florida, and it just so happened this took off," Birdwell said.

"We've kind of set a new trend," said Oaks. "Just taking it all in."

It's a new trend, now seen nationwide.

Birdwell said traffic to her website has been through the roof, a blessing during this pandemic with the cancellation of weddings.

More than anything, she's happy for Oaks to enjoy his new found fame.
