TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Parents and their students may soon have more of a choice when it comes to their education.

Florida lawmakers sent Govenor Ron DeSantis a bill to create a new voucher program for students to attend private and religious schools using taxpayer dollars traditionally spent on public education.

Wakulla County Schools Superintendent Bobby Pearce says this bill could impact more public schools in urban areas than rural areas.

"Especially in rural areas, where charters are not as likely to show up," said Pearce. "I think you'll see more movement towards faith-based schools and maybe some private schools that are open. Significantly more impactful to some of the urban centers around the state. "

The new voucher program would place priority on the students from the lowest-income families. All students in the program would be eligible until they graduate high school or turn 21, whichever comes first.
