TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — Wheels up for the first United Airlines flight in Tallahassee, marking the first of many flights coming to the Capital City.

That first United flight took off Wednesday and the city says this partnership brings more affordable travel opportunities for people in our area or people passing through.

United Airlines will have now have direct flights between Tallahassee and Houston.

This new partnership makes four major airlines now flying in and out of Tallahassee International Airport.

"There's been impacts there's no doubt about it but we're going to do everything that we can to continue to move the needle in respects to options for our travelers and do the best that we can to control the rates," said David Pollard, the director of Aviation at TIA.

A water cannon salute was performed to welcome the first United flight.

People flying to and from Houston daily will travel on CRJ200 jet aircraft.

There are 25 travelers coming into Tallahassee today and 15 passing through and the move means 10 new United jobs in the area.

TIA says they have taken extreme COVID-19 measures to make sure that traveling is safe for everyone.
